Supporting the next generation of Guernsey Advocates
The Guernsey Bar Bursary Scheme is a flagship initiative by the Guernsey Bar Council, delivered in partnership with Law Guernsey, to provide meaningful financial support to qualified solicitors and barristers seeking to become Guernsey Advocates. The Scheme has been designed to ease the cost of qualification and strengthen the availability of legal services in areas of greatest public need — particularly criminal, family and other legally aided work.
Who is it for?
This bursary is open to applicants who:
-
Are already qualified as solicitors or barristers in a UK jurisdiction (typically England & Wales);
-
Are committed to practising as Guernsey Advocates in criminal law, family law, or other areas eligible for Legal Aid funding;
-
Have the backing of a Guernsey law firm and a pupil supervisor actively engaged in legally aided work.
What the Scheme Covers
Successful applicants will receive a cash award over two years, including:
-
A cash bursary of up to £15,000 per annum (for up to two years)
-
Full payment of course fees and materials for the Guernsey Bar and Caen courses
-
Coverage of Guernsey Bar exam fees
Why This Matters
This Scheme is more than financial aid — it's a practical expression of the Bar Council’s responsibility to uphold access to justice. In recent years, demand for legal aid in Guernsey has grown, while the number of practitioners serving those needs has not kept pace. By offering substantial support to those who are willing to serve in these critical areas, the Bar Council is investing in a resilient and inclusive legal system
What We Expect in Return
Recipients of the bursary will be expected to:
-
Practise primarily in criminal and/or family law, or other areas eligible for legal aid;
-
Complete at least 400 hours per year of legal aid work for a minimum of two years post-qualification;
-
Participate in the Duty Advocate Scheme, providing representation at the Police Station and Magistrates’ Court.
These commitments form part of an Award Agreement signed by the recipient, their firm and their pupil supervisor
